The “Minna no Nihongo Elementary Level, Second Edition” has finally been published. As stated in the preface of the First Edition, this textbook may be considered a companion volume to “Shin Nihongo no Kiso,” which was originally developed for engineering trainees.
The First Edition of Minna no Nihongo was published in March 1988. At that time, in line with the development of international relations, the social environment surrounding Japanese language education began to change. Consequently, the number of learners grew rapidly and significantly, prompting the need to address the increasing diversity of goals and learning needs in Japanese language education on a more individualized basis.
Minna no Nihongo Elementary Level has been in use for over a decade and has earned high praise for its clear and accessible topics and learning methods, its high sensitivity to the diversity of learners, its comprehensive content, and its outstanding effectiveness for learners who aim to acquire Japanese conversational skills in a short period of time.
The Second Edition of Minna no Nihongo focuses on enhancing its practical usability and updating vocabulary and situational contexts to reflect current trends. We have expanded the content of the exercises and practice questions, incorporating feedback from learners and educators in the field, while maintaining the textbook’s core structure as a resource that is “easy to learn from and easy to teach with.” Our aim is to encourage learners not only to practice passively by following instructions but also to understand situations independently and thereby strengthen their ability to produce expressions through their own thinking. To support this, we have included numerous illustrations throughout the Second Edition.
